Halo Spartan Ops Ep1-3

I’m now able and very happy to say I’ve been working on the Halo Spartan Ops cut-scenes for 343 Industries/Microsoft Studios. There will be ten episodes released by February 2013 and I’ll showcase them all here once they’re available along with some break downs of the sections I worked on.

Tajemnica Spowiedzi

I recently volunteered my services to produce a poster for Secret of Confession -Tajemnica Spowiedzi, which is an end of year film by QMU Media student, Agata Jagodzinska. She has went on to do exceptionally well with the film, as you can see from all the laurels, including picking up a BAFTA for Best Writer in the new talent category so well done all round!

I was allowed to watch the film and then given a frame to work with,which you can see in the slider above. ‘In your face orange’ was just a starting point for the tone of the poster but after a look at some alternatives Agata kept wanting to come back to the original colour as it sat really well with the themes of the film. It was great looking through a heap of Polish film posters from past and present. There are some really amazing ones from the 1980′s where designers have taken Hollywood icons and snuck in some cold-war-era political messages. Check out this great post on wellmedicated to see what I mean.

I’ll post the actual film when Agata has finished taking it on tour around Eastern Europe.

Original Star Wars Effects Documentary

Here’s a great find from 1980 on the special effects on the first 3 Star Wars films as well as a few other films. Mark Hamill at one point explains that on Empire Strikes Back “some shots contain 38″ blue-screen elements. Put this up against today’s FX shots for blockbusters containing hundreds of elements if not more and you are reminded of how much you actually need to tell a story.

It’s great to see all the miniature sets and models they used. Oh and beards must have been mandatory at ILM in 1980.

The Art of the Japanese Manhole Cover

That sentence rates high on being able to make most folk turn and walk away when you mention it but wait! I came across this great blog post on the strange and surprising world of Japanese Manhole Covers. They really are a thing to behold. Each city has one or more unique designs ranging from icons of the city, abstract designs to the plain strange.

It also reminded me I had a couple of photos of the covers from my trip to Japan so had to share.
